Document Scope

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the proper functionality and connectivity of the RAM modules in a computer system. Reseating RAM can resolve various issues, including no video display, system hangs at BIOS screen, hangs or crashes after loading the Operation System, memory errors, and boot problems. This guide will provide step-by-step instructions on how to safely remove and reinstall RAM modules.

Tools Needed:

  • Anti-static wrist strap (optional, but recommended)
  • Phillips-head screwdriver (if needed to open the computer case)
  • Compressed air (optional, for cleaning)

Step 1: Power Down and Unplug

Shut down your computer completely. Unplug the power cord and any other connected cables (e.g., monitor, keyboard, mouse).

Step 2. Discharge Static Electricity

To prevent static damage, wear an anti-static wrist strap or frequently touch a metal part of the computer case to discharge any static electricity.

Step 3: Remove the Case Cover

Depending on your computer model, you may need to use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove screws securing the side panel or cover. Carefully remove the cover and set it aside.

The examples shown here may not match your system, but the procedure is similar.

Step 4: Locate the RAM Modules

Find the RAM slots on your motherboard. These are usually long slots located near the CPU.

Step 5: Remove the RAM modules

Release the clips on either end of the RAM slot by gently pushing them outward. Some motherboards have 1 or 2 clips for each stick RAM, both examples are shown here.

Carefully pull the RAM module straight out of the slot. Avoid touching the gold connectors.

Step 6: Inspect and Clean

Inspect the RAM module and the slot for any dust or debris. If necessary, use compressed air to clean the slots.

Step 7: Reinstall the RAM Modules

Align the RAM module with the slot, ensuring the notch in the module matches the key in the slot. Insert the RAM module into the slot at a 90-degree angle. Press down firmly on both ends of the module until the clips click into place, securing the RAM.

Step 8: Closing the Case

Reattach the side panel or cover and secure it with screws if needed.

Step 9: Reconnect and Power Up

Reconnect the power cord and any other cables. Power on your computer and ensure it boots correctly.

Step 10: Verify Functionality

Check that the system recognizes the RAM and operates without errors. You can verify this by checking the system properties or using a memory diagnostic tool. If you are able to access the BIOS settings, ensure that ALL sticks of RAM are visible.

Example:

Pressing the 'Del' key will typically allow you to enter the BIOS Settings during System POST. In the BIOS Settings, look for the Memory Topology option to see which sticks of RAM are properly installed on your motherboard.
