Document Scope
This guide will cover the process of accessing BIOS on hardware from different manufacturers, including but not limited to ASRock, ASUS, SuperMicro, and others commonly used in Exxact systems.
Accessing the BIOS Locally
To access the BIOS settings using the BIOS key, it is recommended to press the key repeatedly immediately after booting the system while the system is performing POST (Power-On Self Test). The splash screen displayed during boot should indicate the appropriate key to use, which should match the BIOS key listed below.
Manufacturer | Key |
ASRock | F2 or DEL |
ASUS | F2 or DEL |
SuperMicro | F2 or DEL |
Tyan | F2 |
Where two keys are listed. we suggest using the alternating method between F2 and DEL keys, as this method typically covers all possibilities and rarely fails to access the BIOS settings. If you encounter any difficulties accessing the BIOS settings, please refer to the splash screen for the correct key to use.
NOTE:
When attempting to access the BIOS settings, please use a standard full-size (104 key) USB keyboard to avoid potential issues. Using a plain USB keyboard can help prevent problems such as wireless connection issues, driver loading delays, or key mapping errors that could otherwise impede your ability to access the BIOS.
Using a standard USB keyboard is recommended to ensure a smooth and reliable experience when accessing BIOS settings during system boot.
Access Remotely
The general approach to accessing BIOS via a KVM connection is particularly useful with systems like SuperMicro that offer remote management through IPMI. By accessing the system in question via IPMI, you can initiate a KVM session. Once connected to the machine remotely, you have the ability to reset it and use a digital keyboard within the KVM session to press the appropriate BIOS key (e.g., DEL or F2) during the boot process.
This method allows for BIOS access even when physical access to the system is limited, providing a convenient and effective way to manage BIOS settings remotely.
