Document Scope:
This article covers how to perform a "power drain" to drain all electricity from the system. The purpose of a power drain is to reset the hardware components and clear any temporary glitches or errors that may be affecting the device's performance.
If possible, make sure to save any unsaved work before performing a power drain, as shutting down the computer may result in data loss if not properly saved.
Step 1: Power Off the System
- If your system is hung, or powered on, but does not have any keyboard/mouse activity, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to force the system to power off.
Step 2: Switch Power Supply to ‘Off’ (0) From the Back
Step 3: Unplug Power Cable From the Power Supply
Step 4: Press and Hold the Power Button for ~30 Seconds
Video:
Power Back On:
1. Plug the power cable back into power supply.
2. Switch the power supply on (I).
3. Press the power button.
Notes:
-
If your system experienced an abrupt shutdown due to overheating, powering down the system will not help it power on any faster. The system needs to cool off to reach safe operating temperatures before it can power on again.
-
Memory leaks or hangs sometimes just need the system to shut off completely to flush out lingering problematic processes.
